Symptoms
- A dull or sharp ache on the outer hip or in the groin
- Pain lying directly on the affected side at night
- Stiffness getting up from sitting after being still for a while
- Pain that flares with stairs or prolonged walking
What Causes It
The hip is a deep, well-protected joint, so pain here usually points to one of a handful of common culprits rather than the joint itself failing outright.
- Hip bursitis, inflammation of the cushioning sac near the joint
- Tendonitis of the muscles that support and move the hip
- Early-stage osteoarthritis affecting the hip joint
- Ongoing overuse from walking, running, or occupations that keep you on your feet
When to See a Doctor
Mild hip discomfort after a long day is common and often settles on its own, but a few patterns are worth getting checked rather than waiting out.
- Pain disrupting your sleep
- Pain that is not improving after a couple of weeks of rest, stretching, and modified activity
- A new limp or a noticeable, ongoing change in how you walk

Is It Your Hip, or Is It Your Back?
This is genuinely one of the most common mix-ups we see. True hip-joint pain tends to sit in the groin or the outer hip and gets worse with specific hip movements, like crossing your legs or standing up from a low chair. Pain that's actually coming from your lower back often radiates into the hip and buttock and gets worse with spine movement, like bending or twisting, rather than hip movement specifically. Bursitis, in particular, causes a very localized ache on the outer point of the hip that's often worse lying directly on it. None of this replaces an in-person exam, but knowing the general pattern helps you describe what you are feeling more precisely when you come in.
How We Treat Hip Pain

Shockwave Therapy : a non-invasive option for bursitis and tendonitis around the hip, delivered over a short series of in-office sessions with no downtime.

Steroid joint injection : a fast option for bursitis flare relief, often providing real, quick relief from that localized outer-hip ache.

PRP : considered for chronic tendon involvement or early arthritic changes in the hip joint.

Accurate diagnosis is the starting point for every hip pain visit here, distinguishing bursitis, tendonitis, arthritis, and referred back pain before recommending a treatment path, rather than treating the symptom without knowing the cause. Dr. Umayr Azimi, MD, dual board-certified in Internal Medicine and Obesity Medicine, walks you through what he finds and why it points to a specific treatment, at either our Canton or Ann Arbor location, with walk-in and same-week visits available seven days a week.
Book My AssessmentFrequently Asked Questions
Bursitis tends to cause a localized ache on the outer hip, while arthritis pain is often deeper and worse with weight-bearing activity. An exam can confirm which applies to you.
Yes, shockwave therapy is often the first treatment recommended for hip bursitis, since it targets inflammation in the affected tissue without surgery or a long recovery.
Many patients notice relief within a few days, though it can vary. Dr. Azimi will discuss what to expect based on your specific diagnosis.
If pain is disrupting your sleep, hasn't improved after a couple of weeks of rest, or has changed how you walk, it's worth scheduling an evaluation.
