Summer Sports & the Risk of Injury
Summer is peak season for sports activity in Michigan. Recreational leagues, youth sports camps, hiking, running, cycling, swimming, and backyard athletics all ramp up significantly from May through September. While staying active is excellent for health, increased activity also means a higher likelihood of sprains, strains, fractures, and other musculoskeletal injuries.
MI Express Urgent Care is your convenient, affordable alternative to the emergency room for most sports injuries that are not immediately life-threatening. Our providers can evaluate, diagnose, and begin treatment for a wide range of sports-related conditions — often with same-day imaging available on-site.
NOTE: Both our Canton and Ann Arbor locations offer on-site X-ray, so most sprains and suspected fractures can be assessed and treated in a single walk-in visit.

Urgent Care vs. the ER for a Sports Injury
Most sports injuries are faster and more affordable to treat at urgent care. Severe trauma and certain red-flag symptoms need the emergency room.
Urgent Care Is Right For You If…
- Sprained ankle or wrist with swelling and pain
- Suspected fracture in the foot, hand, wrist, or lower leg
- Muscle strain or contusion with intact circulation
- A sports-related laceration or skin abrasion
- Joint pain, stiffness, or limited range of motion
- Shoulder, knee, or elbow injury without vascular compromise
Go to the ER If…
- Open fracture with bone visible through the skin
- Suspected spinal cord injury from a high-impact fall
- Loss of sensation or circulation below the injury site
- Severe head injury with loss of consciousness
- Chest or abdominal trauma from a collision or impact
- Rapidly expanding swelling with signs of vascular injury

Concussion Awareness
A concussion is a type of brain injury caused by a bump, blow, or jolt to the head during sports activity. If you or your child experiences any of the following after a head impact, seek prompt medical evaluation:
- Headache or pressure in the head
- Confusion, memory problems, or difficulty concentrating
- Dizziness or balance problems
- Nausea or vomiting
- Sensitivity to light or noise
- Slurred speech or unusual behavior
Our providers can perform a concussion evaluation and advise on safe return-to-play timelines.
Any loss of consciousness, seizure, or worsening neurological symptoms after a head injury should be treated as an emergency — call 911.

How to Prevent Summer Sports Injuries
Many sports injuries are preventable with good preparation and smart training habits:
- Warm up properly before activity and cool down afterward with gentle stretching
- Wear sport-appropriate footwear with proper support for your activity
- Use protective gear such as helmets, knee pads, and wrist guards
- Gradually increase training intensity rather than jumping into high activity levels
- Stay hydrated throughout all outdoor activities, especially on hot days
- Listen to your body — do not push through significant pain
- Ensure rest days are built into any training or league schedule

Sprains and fractures can feel very similar — both cause pain, swelling, and difficulty bearing weight. The only reliable way to distinguish between the two is with an X-ray. Our providers will examine the injury and image it to give you a clear diagnosis and treatment plan.
Healing time depends on the severity of the sprain. A mild (grade 1) sprain may heal within 1 to 3 weeks. A moderate (grade 2) sprain may take 3 to 6 weeks. A severe (grade 3) sprain can take 3 to 6 months with proper treatment and rehabilitation.
