Tonsil stones: Causes, symptoms, and treatment

Tonsils or Tonsilloliths are the pieces of tissues in the back of each side of the mouth. Tonsils are gland-like structures made up of tissues that contain lymph nodes that filter out bacteria and viruses and fight infections. They are an important part of the immune system as they work like nets and trapping the incoming virus, bacteria and mucus passing through throat. Tonsils may be developed in such a way when humans are not exposed to many germs. People who have had tonsils detached are no more likely to go through bacterial and viral infections than people with intact tonsils.

Tonsils are of three types:

  • Palatine (on throat sides)
  • Pharyngeal ( at throat back)
  • Lingual ( at back or base of tongue)


Tonsils are removed when becoming painful. Although tonsils stones may be difficult to examine, they can cause noticeable symptoms. Small tonsils are more common but they may not cause any symptom.  Symptoms include:

  • Bad breath
  • Ear pain
  • Sore throat
  • Swollen tonsils
  • Trouble swallowing
  • Cough
  • Yellow or white debris on tonsils


The possible cause of tonsils stones include:

  • Poor dental hygiene
  • Chronic sinus problems
  • Large tonsils
  • Inflamed tonsils


Due to the small size and structure of tonsils they are often not visible with naked eyes. Moreover the twists and folds of tonsils providing a hiding place for stones to form. Tonsils are usually diagnosed by CT scans or dental X-rays. canton urgent care


The appropriate treatment for tonsils depends on the size of tonsils and the extent of discomfort caused by it. Mostly tonsils are not always with harm but people want get rid of it as its create a bad smell and create discomfort. These can be removed by the following ways:


Gargling with salty water may help to knock out tonsils and can relieve the discomfort of throat. Salt water also helps to eliminate the odor and change mouth chemistry.


Tonsils may be first felt when coughing and energetic coughing may help to loosen the stones.


Antibiotics can be used in some cases to treat tonsils. These antibiotics can lower the bacteria counts that play a role in the growth and development of tonsil stones. However, these cannot treat the underlying cause and should not be used long term.

Tips for reducing the formation of tonsil stones:

  • Brush teeth and tongue twice a day.
  • Wash mouth with appropriate mouthwash.
  • Drink more water.
  • Avoid alcohol consumption because alcohol causes dry mouth.
  • Use cotton swabs to push off the tonsils.
  • Drink lemon juice because vitamin C can help in removing tonsil stones.
  • Eating raw garlic because its anti-bacterial properties help to remove bacteria.

All the above treatments are effective but only a physician can recommend the best one. However, the best way to prevent tonsils is to maintain good health habits and proper hygiene.
